Best Nashville Suburbs for Families (2026 Guide)

Nashville has become one of the most exciting cities in the country—live music, incredible restaurants, pro sports, and nonstop growth. It’s easy to see why so many people are relocating here.

That said, most families making the move to Middle Tennessee aren’t actually living in the heart of downtown Nashville. Instead, they’re choosing suburbs and communities just outside the city that offer more space, strong schools, and a better day-to-day lifestyle—while still keeping Nashville within easy reach.

If you’re trying to figure out where to land, here’s a breakdown of some of the best Nashville suburbs for families.

1. City Access Without the Chaos: Donelson & Crieve Hall

If you want to stay as close to Nashville as possible while still having a neighborhood feel, areas like Donelson and Crieve Hall are great places to start.

Donelson is one of the most convenient locations in the entire Nashville area. It’s home to Nashville International Airport, so if you travel for work—or just like to always have a trip on the calendar—you can’t beat the proximity. You’re also just minutes from downtown, which means restaurants, concerts, and entertainment are always right there when you want them.

Crieve Hall, on the other hand, offers more of an established, residential feel. Located near Nippers Corner, you’ll find classic ranch-style homes, mature trees, and a strong sense of community. You’re also in a great spot with easy access to South Nashville, I-65, and just a short drive to Brentwood.

2. Lake Life + Space: Goodlettsville & Hendersonville

Heading north of Nashville, you’ll find areas like Goodlettsville and Hendersonville, both of which offer a different pace compared to the city.

Hendersonville is one of the original suburbs of Middle Tennessee and sits right along Old Hickory Lake. If boating, lake days, or just being near the water is high on your list, this is one of the first places you should look. It’s also home to the historic residence of Johnny Cash, which adds to the area’s character.

Families are often drawn here for the strong schools in Sumner County, along with the amount of shopping, restaurants, and everyday conveniences available.

One thing to be aware of—commuting into Nashville during peak hours can be a challenge, especially with the I-65 bottleneck connecting to Vietnam Veterans Blvd. But for families who don’t need to be downtown every day, this area offers a lot of value.

3. Premium Living: Brentwood & Franklin

If your budget allows, Brentwood and Franklin are some of the most desirable areas not just in Middle Tennessee—but in the entire state.

Located in Williamson County, these areas are known for:

  • top-rated schools
  • beautiful rolling hills
  • high-end homes
  • well-planned communities

Franklin, in particular, offers a historic downtown square that feels straight out of a movie—charming, walkable, and full of local shops and restaurants.

Brentwood leans a little more residential and private, with larger homes and a quieter feel, while still being just a short drive into Nashville.

The trade-off here is price. These areas come at a premium, but for many families, the combination of schools, lifestyle, and long-term value makes it worth i4t.

4. The Fast-Growing Favorite: Mt. Juliet

Mt. Juliet has quickly become one of the most popular destinations for relocation buyers—and for good reason.

In my opinion, it offers one of the best overall balances of any Nashville suburb:

  • easy access to downtown via I-40
  • commuter rail access through the Music City Star
  • close proximity to the airport without being right next to it
  • a mix of suburban convenience and a little bit of rural space

Being located in Wilson County also means access to highly rated public schools, which is a big driver for many families.

Mt. Juliet is growing quickly—the secret is definitely out—but there’s still a lot of opportunity here, especially with newer neighborhoods and continued development.
