If you’re thinking about moving to Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, one of the first things you’ll notice is that living on the north side of town can feel pretty different from living on the south side.
There isn’t a “better” side of Mt. Juliet—it really comes down to what you want to be close to and what kind of home and neighborhood you’re looking for.
I’ve lived in Mt. Juliet for years and help a lot of people relocate here, and North vs. South is a conversation I have with buyers all the time. The good news is that both sides give you access to everything that makes Mt. Juliet a great place to call home. The differences are more about neighborhoods, location, interstate access, the lake and everyday convenience.
Here’s what I think you should know.

Where Is North Mt. Juliet vs. South Mt. Juliet?
One of the easiest ways to begin understanding Mt. Juliet is to think of the city in two general areas: north and south.
The south side includes much of the growth around Providence, Interstate 40 and the areas extending toward Gladeville. This is where you’ll find many of Mt. Juliet’s larger and newer residential communities.
North Mt. Juliet is the more established side of town, extending north from the central part of Mt. Juliet toward Old Hickory Lake. You’ll find older neighborhoods, established homes, local businesses and convenient access to the lake.
These aren’t official boundaries, but thinking about Mt. Juliet this way can make it much easier for someone relocating here to understand the area.
If you’re just beginning your research, I’d start with my Moving to Mt. Juliet, TN Guide for a broader look at housing, schools, neighborhoods and everyday life in Mt. Juliet.
Living in South Mt. Juliet
A lot of Mt. Juliet’s residential growth has happened on the south side of town.
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice is the number of larger, community-driven neighborhoods. Depending on the neighborhood, you may find amenities such as pools, walking trails, green spaces, clubhouses and other shared community features.
There is also a mixture of established communities and new construction, making the south side an area many buyers explore when they want newer homes or larger planned developments.
If that type of neighborhood interests you, take a look at my Mt. Juliet Neighborhoods Guide, where I break down several communities around town.
South Mt. Juliet Offers Convenient Access to I-40 and Nashville
One of the biggest practical advantages of South Mt. Juliet is access to Interstate 40.
Depending on exactly where you live, getting onto I-40 can be relatively straightforward, which is worth considering if you’ll regularly travel toward Nashville.
South Mt. Juliet also provides convenient access toward Nashville International Airport (BNA), making this part of town worth considering for buyers who travel frequently.
That doesn’t mean you won’t encounter traffic—Mt. Juliet has grown considerably, and Nashville-area traffic varies greatly by time of day. But if regular access to I-40, BNA or Nashville is important to you, your location within Mt. Juliet matters.
South Mt. Juliet Puts You Closer to Gladeville
Another consideration is that South Mt. Juliet extends toward Gladeville and southern Wilson County.
This can open up additional housing and new construction options beyond the central Mt. Juliet area while still keeping you close to the shopping, restaurants and services available in Mt. Juliet.
For buyers searching a wider area, I often encourage them not to draw an arbitrary line at a city boundary. Sometimes the right home may be slightly farther south while still giving you convenient access to the parts of Mt. Juliet you use most.
New Construction in South Mt. Juliet
If you’re specifically looking for a newer home, South Mt. Juliet should definitely be part of your search.
Several of the area’s newer communities and larger developments are located on or around the south side of town.
But new construction comes with its own set of considerations—from builder incentives and inspections to location and school zones.
I’ve put together a complete Buying New Construction in Mt. Juliet, TN Guide explaining what I think buyers should know before visiting a model home or signing a builder contract.
North vs. South Mt. Juliet: Watch My Local Video Guide
If you’d rather see the differences than just read about them, watch my video above. I walk through some of the biggest reasons someone might choose North Mt. Juliet or South Mt. Juliet and what I think relocation buyers should consider when deciding where to focus their home search.
Living in North Mt. Juliet
North Mt. Juliet has a different feel from many of the newer developments on the south side.
This is the more established part of town, with older neighborhoods, mature areas and homes built across a wider range of decades.
Rather than being dominated by large newer developments, you’ll find a mixture of established subdivisions and residential areas.
For someone who doesn’t necessarily want a newer master-planned community, North Mt. Juliet may offer the type of setting they’re looking for.
North Mt. Juliet and Old Hickory Lake
One of the biggest geographic advantages of North Mt. Juliet is proximity to Old Hickory Lake.
If spending time around the water is important to you, this can make the northern side of Mt. Juliet particularly interesting to explore.
The northern part of town puts you closer to lake access and recreation around Old Hickory Lake while still keeping you within Mt. Juliet.
Even if you aren’t looking for a waterfront property, having the lake nearby is simply part of the lifestyle on this side of town.
Local Restaurants and the More Established Side of Mt. Juliet
Another thing I like about North Mt. Juliet is the concentration of local restaurants and longtime businesses.
The south side has plenty of restaurants and shopping—particularly around the Providence area—but North Mt. Juliet gives you access to some of the more established local spots that have been part of the community for years.
This is also where our growing library of Mt. Juliet lifestyle content will eventually come into play.
The Tradeoff: North Mt. Juliet Is Farther From I-40
If you need to commute into Nashville regularly, this is something you should consider.
The farther north you live in Mt. Juliet, the farther you generally have to travel before reaching Interstate 40.
That can add time to a Nashville commute compared with living closer to the interstate on the south side.
How much it matters depends on the specific home, your destination and the time of day you’re traveling, so I wouldn’t choose a home based on a generalized commute estimate alone.
But for someone moving to Mt. Juliet and commuting into Nashville several days a week, I-40 access should absolutely be part of the conversation.
What About Schools in North vs. South Mt. Juliet?
School assignments are another reason buyers shouldn’t choose between North and South Mt. Juliet based solely on a map.
Wilson County school zones are based on the specific property address, and assignments can change as the area grows.
Instead of assuming that a particular part of Mt. Juliet automatically means a particular school, verify the school assignment for any home you’re seriously considering.
I’ve created a Schools in Mt. Juliet, TN Guide to help relocation buyers understand the school structure and how school zones fit into a Mt. Juliet home search.
What About Schools in North vs. South Mt. Juliet?
There isn’t one answer that works for every buyer.
If you’re drawn to larger planned neighborhoods, newer construction, convenient I-40 access and being closer to the Gladeville side of the area, you may find yourself looking more heavily at South Mt. Juliet.
If you prefer more established areas, proximity to Old Hickory Lake, local restaurants and don’t mind being farther from I-40, North Mt. Juliet may deserve more of your attention.
And you don’t necessarily need to decide before you begin looking.
When I’m working with someone relocating to Mt. Juliet, I often find that seeing both sides of town helps everything click. Once you understand the neighborhoods, commute, schools, shopping and overall geography, it becomes much easier to narrow your search.
